Wines of Austria
The wines of the Austrian Danube are living a moment of glory not seen in decades. The introduction of the DAC system (Districtus Austriae Controllatus) in 2002, which is similar to the denominations of origin, has boosted quality winemaking in the country. Since then, 10 DACs have been recognized and allow the production of different wine styles; from the classic Grüner Veltliner of Traisental to the blend of grapes varieties from a single vineyard of the Gemischter Satz in the Vienna region.
Some of the best Austrian wines are sweet in the Trokenbeerenauslese category or the famous Eiswein (Icewine), made with grapes such as Grüner Veltliner or Riesling. However, the most southern areas have a significant production of red wine with really interesting results; The main grapes of these regions are the Zweigelt, Blaufrankisch, and St. Laurent.
