Visit Château Gruaud Larose
Château Gruaud Larose is a property dating from the year 1725. It was ranked second in the famous and famous Médoc classification in 1855. Since its creation, four families have succeeded one another at the head of Gruaud Larose: the Gruaud and Larose families, the Balguerie and Sarget families, the Cordier family and the Merlaut family.
The largest concentration of Grand Cru wines is in the Medoc, an area which benefits from a microclimate that is particularly favorable for the expression of the vines and the wines.
The name of the château is the result of the union of the "Gruaud" and "Larose" family names who were owners of the property during the 18th century. The estate is located in the south of the commune of Saint Julien, where vineyards lie on deep gravel soil. Cabernet Sauvignon is the most planted grape of the estate. It represents almost 70% of the total vineyard. Merlot comes after with more than 20%, and the rest is divided between Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
After the tour, we tasted Sarget de Gruaud Larose 2012, the second wine. As we expect, it is a full-bodied wine, with a wonderful nose expression, notes of black berries, black pepper, cinnamon and delicate toches of oak and tobacco. On the palate it was mouth-filling, with velvety tannins, and long aftertaste. Very nice for a second wine.
The next wine that the winery offers is Château Gruaud Larose 2003. The singularity of this wine lies in the vintage, which was a very hot year. Even so, the vines didn’t suffer. This phenomenon made the grapes ripen faster therefore, the harvest was carried out 3 weeks earlier than the rest of the harvest. The wine was ready to drink. we found aromas of tobacco, cigar box, nutmeg, and slightly nuances of leather, earth and oak. On the palate was smooth, with silky tannins, lively acidity and long length. It was at its peak of maturity.
