In 2010 has started a project that has for goal to rescue, protect and promote (in that order) the vineyards of the Carignan grape variety from the maulino dry-farmed zone, a small area well designated in the south of the Maule Valley with very specific production conditions that can turn it into the first DOC of Chile.

Characterized by granitic soils, continental climate with wide thermal differential and protected by the Coast Range, these conditions allow to have a healthy and high quality viticulture.

PRODUCTION FEATURES

Region: Maule Valley (Dry-farmed zone of South of Maule Valley).

Grape variety: Carignan minimum 65%, the remaining percentage is up to the winemaking criteria of each producer. Whatever the grapevines used to complement the blend, they must comply the same wine production features (training, irrigation, age of vines, harvest) as the grapes of Carignan.

Training System should be in bush (or gobelet) and must have a system of irrigation dry-farmed, in few words without irrigation.

Old vines: 30 years minimum.

Fully manual harvest.

Aging: at least 24 months, either in barrel or in bottle.

14 wineries have joined the VIGNO project and the recognition has started from critics at an international level.
